Understanding the reasons behind hair loss

Male pattern baldness is a very common reason for hair loss, but it is far from the only cause. Below you will find some of the other main causes behind hair loss:

    • Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition that causes hair to fall out in patches. Hair loss is usually temporary
    • Scarring alopecia is much rarer. It destroys the hair follicles and replaces them with scar tissue
    • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) creates hormonal imbalance and overall hair thinning
    • Thyroid problems affect the hair-growth cycle resulting in hair loss
    • Childbirth and menopause trigger hormonal changes which can result in hair loss
    • Extreme stress can cause a sudden and dramatic shedding of hair
    • Chemotherapy and radiotherapy can both trigger dramatic hair loss

By carrying out an in-depth assessment, Dr Nicole can determine the reason behind your hair loss in order to target the treatment effectively. Her specialist experience and expertise in all the causes of hair loss enables her to develop a programme that is especially designed for you. You will have the chance to ask questions and voice any concerns – we will always provide professional, honest and comprehensive answers.

    Frequently Asked Questions

About Restore hair programme at Dr Nicole Dermatology
      • Can all hair loss be treated?

As hair loss is caused by so many factors, it is important to diagnose the cause before information on potential outcomes can be given. Dr Nicole will use every resource possible to help with your hair loss. Unfortunately, promoting new hair growth is not possible if you have scarring alopecia.

      • What results can I expect?

Most treatment programmes involve medication which needs to be taken or used from 6 to 12 months (longer in some cases). Results generally depend on the type of hair loss. In non-scarring hair loss, there is a potential for hair to regrow. In scarring hair loss, it is difficult to regrow hair once the hair follicles are lost, and treatments are generally aimed at preventing further hair loss.

      • How does Dr Nicole’s Restore hair programme work?

The first critical step is to have a consultation with Dr Nicole to assess your hair loss and the causes behind it. Dr Nicole will then devise a bespoke treatment programme to stop further hair loss and restore growth.

Generally speaking, the programme can include a consultation, follow-up reviews during the treatment, an introductory pack of hair-growth products and prescription medications (depending on your underlying condition).

      • How long do the results last?

The Restore hair programme takes a long-term approach so results should be ongoing. Some hair loss conditions need ongoing treatment to maintain results and prevent further hair loss.

      • Is the programme safe?

Your safety and wellbeing are of the utmost importance. Dr Nicole will talk through any risks associated with medications prescribed during your consultation.

    1 Consultation

Your consultation gives you the perfect opportunity to ask any questions you might have. We will assess your hair loss and its causes to develop a treatment plan that is exactly right for you. At consultation, your hair loss condition will be assessed to determine whether you are suitable for the hair loss programme. Full information on what the programme involves, risks and aftercare instructions will be given.

    2 The Treatment

Your initial consultation will take around 30 minutes. A major part of the treatment programme will be at home in the form of hair-growth products and medications.

    3 Aftercare

The programme incorporates follow-up reviews to ensure your results are monitored carefully during the course of treatment.
